Pennsylvania English Call for Critical Essay Submissions

The deadline for receipt of submissions is November 30, 2025

Submission guidelines

* For all submissions, please include a brief bio for the contributors' page. Be sure to include your name, address, phone number, email address, institutional affiliation (if you have one), the title of your essay, and any other relevant information.

* Pennsylvania English invites submissions dedicated to the critical essay as a form of intellectual engagement, theoretical intervention, and cultural critique. We seek essays that push the boundaries of conventional academic writing while demonstrating rigorous analysis, originality, and an acute awareness of context.  Critical essays have long been a vital mode of scholarly and cultural expression, traversing disciplines and challenging epistemological norms. In an era marked by digital fragmentation, social upheaval, and theoretical innovation, the critical essay remains uniquely positioned to interrogate dominant narratives, propose alternative frameworks, and bridge the gap between academic and public discourse.  To this end, we welcome contributions from scholars, critics, independent researchers, and cultural commentators across the humanities.  Length of submissions should be between 4,000 to 6,000 words.  Please also include an abstract of no more than 250 words for the entire piece.

* Contributors may submit one piece of previously unpublished work per volume. Contributors will be notified of acceptance status via email after the completion of the reading period. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but please withdraw your work from consideration immediately if your piece is accepted for publication elsewhere. Upon publication, you will receive one copy of Pennsylvania English.
